WIDNES ............ 10 WARRINGTON ...19

SILENT assassin Kurt Gidley shot down the Vikings as the Warrington revival continued.

The Aussie’s half-back partner Dec Patton shone with plenty of the flashy stuff and also kicked three goals and a drop goal.

But it was 34-year-old Gidley who quietly organised and masterminded a first back-to-back win of the season.

Victory moves them two points clear of bottom side Widnes, who got off to a flier with a second minute Stefan Marsh try.

The home side then made life difficult for themselves with a series of penalties, earning them a team warning.

Finish

Warrington winger Tom Lineham was the first to punish them with a try and Gidley quickly put in Jack Hughes for another.

Patton converted one for a 10-4 lead but Widnes responded well and pummelled the Wolves line for long spells – without success.

Warrington defended superbly and then showed them the killer finish they were missing, with Gidley putting Joe Philbin over.

Ryan Atkins and Patton also had tries disallowed by the video referee and they were good value for their 17-4 half-time lead. Widnes returned with far more grit in defence and threat in attack and Charly Runciman got a deserved 59th minute try.

The Vikings continued to crank up the pressure and a Warrington side who had lost their opening six games started to look nervous.

But, with Gidley leading the way, they sealed the win with a late Patton penalty to move within a point of Monday’s opponents Huddersfield.
