Earlier this month, Manchester United legend Rio spoke of his pain at losing Rebecca, 35, to cancer in 2015.
The dad-of-three told how he could understand suicide as he described his torment in a BBC documentary.
Now blonde beauty Kate, who this week announced she is leaving reality show Towie, has hit back. She wrote on Instagram: “So many people getting caught up in the BS.
“Only thing that matters is (health and happiness).”
Fans backed her, with one writing: “I don’t get why Kate is getting hate for dating Rio Ferdinand. If it’s what makes him happy and ultimately a better dad who is anyone to judge?”
Another wrote: “Ignore the haters and the idiots!” A third added: “You deserve happiness just like the rest of the world does.”
Reports have suggested Kate and Rio have been close since January. They are said to have enjoyed a “string of dates” in Dubai last week.
A source said: “His number one priority are his three kids and he will always put their welfare in front of anything else.
“Kate is very smitten with him and happy to wait and see what happens.”
