Dawson dreads repeat of drop

- By JASON MELLOR

MICHAEL DAWSON has already endured the worst day of his career at Hull – and he’s in no mood to suffer the misery of relegation once more.

Skipper Dawson ranks the Tigers’ drop from the Premier League two years ago as his all-time low.

Hull are in danger of a repeat as they go into the final five games of the season one place and two points above the drop zone.

The 33-year-old is desperate to stay in the top flight and avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

He admits to being spurred on by the devastation he felt in 2015 when Steve Bruce’s men plummeted from the safety of mid-table into the bottom three.

Hull have been in the relegation zone for much of this campaign.

Former England defender Dawson said: “Going down two years ago was the worst day of my career and I hope never to have to go through something like that again.

“We’ve made a good fight of it this time, and it would be a remarkable story if we do get out of trouble.

Hope

“There are five more cup finals ahead of us, and hopefully, come the end of May, we will still be a Premier League team.

“I’ve had many years of it at this level and I want a few more.

“Even at my age, it’s no different, I want to be at the highest level for as long as possible, and we’re all striving for that.”

Hull are unbeaten at home in the league since Marco Silva took charge in January, with five wins and a draw giving them renewed hope.

Wins from their final three games at the KCOM Stadium should be enough to stave off relegation, starting with today’s visit by mid-table Watford.

Hull host title-chasing Spurs on the final day of the campaign, and Dawson wants survival assured before his old club roll into town.

He added: “For long periods this season we’ve been at the bottom.

“But now we’ve put ourselves in a position where it’s in our own hands and we have to make the most of that.

“It would be nice to have everything sorted before the Spurs game, then we can just go out and enjoy it on the final day.”
