Judge rules yob’s rights come first

A JIHADI thug who threatened to behead a prison warden can’t be put in segregatio­n as punishment because a judge says it will breach his human rights.

But he has still managed to successful­ly sue the Ministry of Defence. The 24-year-old was placed in isolation at top-security Woodhill jail, in Bucks, before being transferre­d to a secure wing of the prison.

But a High Court judge ruled Woodhill breached his human rights by locking him in the unit.

In the days before his segregatio­n, Syed had led a gang of other Muslim inmates in chanting “Allahu Akbar” (God is great), banged on cell doors and threatened to decapitate prison staff.

Hostage

Wardens had been told not to be alone with him in case he took them hostage.

At the High Court, Mr Justice Lewis said Syed’s detention was unlawful as he was not told he was going to be placed in the unit.

Syed’s lawyers argued stopping him from speaking to other prisoners breached his right to a private life under the European Convention on Human Rights. The ruling comes just days after the Government announced the introducti­on of ‘prisons within prisons’ to help tackle radicalisa­tion behind bars.

Syed, from Hounslow, west London, was convicted in December 2015 of preparing for an act of terrorism and was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years.
