Matt’s plea to Latics as the drop beckons

- By CHRIS BRERETON

MATT GILKS wants more stability at Wigan as they look to be heading straight back down to League One after a nightmare year in the Championship.

The Latics had no cutting edge in Saturday’s drab goalless draw against mid-table Cardiff, and it has been a season to forget at the DW Stadium.

Gilks is one of the most experienced players in the Wigan dressing room and he is baffled by how and why their form has been so poor this season.

But the goalkeeper has called for the club to be more settled if they are to become a force once again and rise up the divisions.

He said: “When you look at the players we have at the club – those in the team, the subs and the ones watching injured from the stands – we have got a really great squad.

“It’s just a difficult league and League One will be even tougher, and I think that’s just football in general.

“I only came here in January and a lot has happened since I joined.

“It’s been unsettled from the get-go really and that’s not ideal. We were in the situation where we were promoted and wanted to stay in the league, so I think a bit of stability at the club next year will be first and foremost on the agenda.

“It will be a busy summer recruiting and getting this club back up.

“We have got a great squad – we just can’t put a finger on why it’s not been successful.”

There was a paltry one shot on target in this encounter, a late Ryan Colclough drive for the home side, in what was a shocker of a game.

Mid-table Cardiff have nothing left to play for this season and it showed on an afternoon where entertainment was thin on the ground.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock said: “I thought we owed it to all the teams down there to keep playing and finish the season well, and we were trying our hardest today.

“I just keep saying roll on the summer because our club needs to have more quality around the place, and we need to make changes if we want to be successful.”
