Turned out white again

ARCTIC CHILL HITS SPRING

A SWARM of deadly jellyfish is set to invade the country.

The Portuguese man o’ war with tentacles as long as five London buses have been spotted off the coast of Cornwall.

Ben Spicer, MD of activity firm Cornish Rock Tors, saw around 10 barrel jellyfish while paddle-boarding in Port Gaverne Bay.

They are harmless but the sightings have led to fears the more lethal Portuguese man o’ war will be following them. A 25ft shark carcass has washed up on a British beach.

The massive basking shark’s remains were found on the sand by shocked walkers over the weekend.

Although it is the second largest living fish, the basking shark is not aggressive and is harmless to humans.

Some thought the giant creature was a dead whale before it landed on the shore on an idyllic beach at Chapel Point, Cornwall. ®

SPRING was put on ice yesterday as snow blanketed large parts of Britain.

With May just days away, a shock Arctic blast brought wintry showers and sub-zero temperatures.

Parts of the UK were colder than Finland. In Northumberland, the mercury plunged to -4.1C, compared to -3C in Finnish capital Helsinki.

Many parts of the north of England and the Midlands were hit by the snowfall. And cities as far south as Norwich woke up to a white dusting. Areas including Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the North East also reported wintry showers. Scotland was hit by snow and hail pelted Devon and Cornwall.

Temperatures are expected to rise again from tomorrow. But forecasters warned Bank Holiday Monday could be a washout. Forecaster Alex Burkill said: “We are going to see plenty of showers. The further north you are, the better chance you’ve got of catching a shower and a greater chance of any shower turning wintry. But you can’t rule it out further south.”

Bookmaker Coral slashed the odds of more snow before the end of the month. But spokesman John Hill said: “There is positive news ahead of the first May bank holiday, though, as we have trimmed the odds on temperatures reaching 20C or higher.

“So some parts of the UK may be dusting off those barbecues after all.”
