I’M BETTER BOSS NOW

Moyes insists he’ll turn Black Cats into winners

- By IAN MURTAGH

UNDER-FIRE Sunderland boss David Moyes believes he’s a better manager now than he was during his days at Everton.

The Scot won the LMA Manager of the Year award three times in seven years in recognition of the job he did at Goodison Park.

This season he’s presided over just five league wins, a record that leaves the Black Cats cast adrift at the foot of the table ahead of tonight’s Tees-Wear derby against Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

Fans turned on him during the 2-2 draw at home to West Ham and if Sunderland become the first Premier League side to lose to Boro in 2017, he can expect another hostile reaction.

But while Moyes’ reputation has taken a bashing since quitting Everton for Manchester United – sacked at Old Trafford and at Real Sociedad before his latest project on Wearside – the man himself insists his self-belief remains intact.

And not only does he predict brighter times ahead for the Black Cats, he feels he’s better equipped now for the salvage job required than he was when he was regularly steering Everton to top-eight finishes.

Asked if he thought he was a better manager today than back then, he said: “Yes, 100 per cent. I would say better now because of the experiences I have had.

“I had great experiences in Spain ® and at Manchester United, albeit for different reasons, and this is different as well.

“I’ve had a lot of really good times in football but on the journey there will be bad times.”

Sunderland have won just once in 2017 and even victory in “the derby of the doomed” would still need them requiring a miracle to survive.
