to stay at Chester and he will be clearly better over a longer trip. “If he keeps progressing, I can see him running in the Derby, especially if there is some cut in the ground.”

Despite Monarchs Glen’s poor performance, Gosden believes the colt can win further races.

“I’m not making any great excuses for him,” said Gosden.”But he did not handle the loose ground. He’s still young and there’s plenty of time.

“Henry Cecil did a remarkable job training Frankel. He was not easy to handle but he managed to show him he was the boss.

“They are wonderful horses. My other three-year-old Frankel colt Cracksman, who won at Epsom on Wednesday, is Mr Laid-back.

“All they want to do is run like the wind. They are amazing athletes and they have just got this amazing wildness in them which I find exciting.”

Roger Charlton was not going overboard about his Frankel colt Atty Persse, winner of the Esher Cup, running in the Derby.

“For a little horse he got bashed around but battled it out well,” said Charlton. “James (Doyle) give him a good ride and I could not be more pleased for a horse that needs a test of stamina.”

Yorkshire trainer Ruth Carr again showed she has to be respected when sending runners south after Sovereign Debt landed the Group Two bet365 Mile.

“Wasn’t I lucky the day I got that phone call! My name just came up when David (Nicholls who had previously trained Sovereign Debt) retired,” said Carr.

“It’s a big day for us, our first runner in a Group race and it’s a winner.”
