Arsene: We are still No.1

- by IAN BAKER

ARSENE WENGER has warned Tottenham it will take more than just one good season to prove they are bigger than Arsenal.

Spurs have not finished above their big rivals since 1995 – before Wenger (above) arrived in north London.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are 14 points ahead in the Premier League table and a win tomorrow will see them achieve that feat.

But Wenger said: “Let’s be honest, I have answered the question of shift of power for 18 consecutive years. Nothing changes in that.

“Do they have to do it more over the years? I think so, you cannot say the weight of one year has the weight of 20.

“The priority for us is to finish in the top four. After that, for pride and continuity of our achievements, we want to be in front of Spurs.

“It’s pride, of course. But when you finish 20 years above them, it’s not important and now suddenly it becomes important. Yes, it

matters, of course. We want to be stronger than Spurs, stronger than everybody.”

When asked if Arsenal would still be a bigger club than Spurs even if they finish below them, Wenger sarcastically replied: “No, I think Arsenal is a much smaller club, we are absolutely terrible.

“That’s a question I answer for 20 years.

“First of all, we are not there. Let’s see how it finishes at the end of the season.”

But Wenger insists wrecking Spurs’ title dream is the last thing on his mind because he is only focused on his club making the top four.

He said: “At the moment, I’m not in that kind of mode of thinking. What is important for us is to win our games.

“Basically, if it’s not Tottenham it’s somebody else. We are in the position where we have to win our next game.

“We focus on our own achievements, our own games. I’m not in football to stop other teams being successful but because I want to be successful ourselves.

“It’s one of the few times where Spurs in people’s minds are favourites, but it doesn’t matter too much to me.

“I focus on Arsenal. What happens to Spurs is not my concern.”
