SHAW SHOCK

EUROPA LEAGUE Guidetti targets a homecoming

- by DAVE LYONS

LUKE SHAW is out for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old came off with ligament trouble in his foot just eight minutes into Manchester United’s draw with Swansea on Sunday.

Shaw (right) is due to see a specialist, but he won’t kick a ball for the rest of the campaign.

That means he is facing a major question mark over his future at United, where Jose Mourinho has already singled him out for criticism this season.

United also lost central

ZLATAN Ibrahimovic’s chance may have been wrecked by injury, but John Guidetti has vowed to ensure there is a Swede on show in the Europa League Final in Stockholm.

And as a former Manchester City player, Guidetti has extra motivation to ensure Celta Vigo end Manchester United’s hopes of reaching the final in the Swedish capital – it’s also his home city – on May 24.

Guidetti spent six years with City after being signed by Sven Goran Eriksson as a teenager in 2008 but only made one first-team appearance.

He spent most of the time out on loan, with spells at Swedish club Brommapojkarn, Burnley, Stoke, Celtic and Feyenoord.

The Sweden international, now 25, finally put down roots when he joined Celta on a free transfer in 2015 and is hoping to help the Spanish club make history by reaching their first major European final.

Recovery

Ahead of tomorrow’s semifinal first leg in Spain, the striker said: “It would be like a fairy-tale ending, to be at the Friends Arena. It would be great for a Stockholmer to get the opportunity to step onto the pitch, but it has to be earned.

“It’s very sad, what happened to Zlatan. Considering how much he has meant to Swedish football, he has also earned the right to play in the final. I wish him a speedy recovery.

“We’ve made history by reaching the semi-final, but we don’t want it to end here. Hopefully we’ll make it to Stockholm and half the stadium will be blue. That would be a dream come true.”

Even though they have a crippling injury list, United will still start favourites to go through over the two legs and keep alive their hopes of Champions League football by winning the Europa League.

But Celta, despite being 11th in La Liga, have knocked Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey and have also recorded wins over Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Guidetti added: “In football, strange things happen if you believe.

“And I think with the mentality we’ve built here, nothing is impossible. We may be a small club, but we also know how good we are.

“We believed from the start that we could get to the final.”
