Sex gang victim’s praise for Corrie
‘PLOT WILL START PEOPLE TALKING’
A SURVIVOR of sexual grooming has praised Coronation Street for the show’s harrowing storyline involving teenager Bethany Platt.
In the ITV soap Bethany was forced to have sex with her sordid boyfriend Nathan Curtis’s pal before he began pimping her out to his friends.
The scenes have shocked Corrie viewers. But the grooming victim, from Sheffield, says it is an important storyline that will serve as a warning to girls like 16-year-old Bethany, played by Lucy Fallon.
Speaking on condition of anonymity yesterday, the victim said: “Coronation Street and the actors are doing really well by bringing it out there.
“Everyone can now speak about it and know about it.
“It does bring back memories but I know it’s a drama and that’s OK because it needs to be identified and talked about.”
Actor Chris Harper, who plays Nathan, has now become a patron for Voicing CSA, a charity which ® support victims of childhood sexual abuse.
Charity founder Phillip Lafferty said: “Chris first became an ambassador and was then offered the opportunity to be patron, which he gratefully accepted.”
He added: “I am pleased this issue is being put in the spotlight.
“It can give victims the strength to come forward and talk to someone about what has happened.”
