® A TOURIST was left with horrific scalding blisters on her hands after having a black henna tattoo.

Sophie Akis noticed itching just hours after being inked on a family holiday to Morocco.

But within two days her hands had swollen and she could not move them.

The 22-year-old, from Birmingham, took a skin test which did not reveal any allergic reactions.

Sophie said: “When I returned to the hotel I noticed little lumps had appeared on my skin and it was a little itchy. I just put it down to the sun.”

When Sophie woke up the next day she was still itchy so she went to a pharmacy to buy some bandages.

But two days later she woke up with an “overwhelming burning sensation” in her hands.

Sophie said: “When I took the bandages off I cried instantly.

“They were starting to blister and it felt like someone had poured hot oil all over my hands.”

Sophie returned to the pharmacy where her hands were washed in iodine solution and bandaged. When she got back to her present home in Corum, Turkey, she went straight to the hospital.

She was given a medical powder and told to wash her hands every five minutes for two days.

Sophie paid just £4 for the black henna, which is illegal to apply in the UK.

The British Skin Foundation recently warned of its dangers by launching a campaign titled #AvoidBlackHenna.
