Now let’s do it the Jard way

LEONARDO JARDIM insists his Monaco side can make Champions League history against Juventus tonight.

Only two teams – Ajax and Inter Milan – have ever won a knockout tie in the competition after losing at home in the first leg.

In both cases, they only had a one-goal deficit to make up, but the Ligue 1 side face an uphill task as they trail 2-0 heading to Turin after a Gonzalo Higuain double last Wednesday.

The odds are stacked against them, given Juve also boast a four-year unbeaten home record in Europe and a run of six successive clean sheets in the competition.

Monaco coach Jardim will look to teenage striker Kylian Mbappe, one of the hottest properties in Europe, and he said: “We have to stay confident, try to play our game and put on a good performance.

“If we score at the start of the game, maybe that could change things. We have to believe.

“A result that we need has happened before and can happen again.”

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, 39, wants to lift the European Cup before he calls it a day.

The Italian was a runner-up in 2003 and 2015 and he said: “There’s definitely a desire to make up for losing those finals.

“Going back through the years my motivation is a lot deeper.

“But Monaco are a side with great talent and we have absolutely not yet sealed our qualification.”
