Another drop will do Sam

- By TREVOR BAXTER

SAM WILLIAMS may be new to Magic Weekend at Newcastle but he knows all about Wakefield’s greatest moment from the Super League showcase.

Jacob Miller’s stunning 50m drop goal winner against Catalans Dragons 12 months ago is one of the most replayed highlights since the Magic event began in 2007.

Williams would love a repeat performance when Trinity open this season’s St James’ Park gamefest against bottom-of-thetable Widnes on Saturday.

“I know, it’s hard to stop him talking about it,” grinned Williams of his half-back partner’s claim to fame.

“You see highlights all the time.

“It was a brilliant moment from a pretty special player. It would be fantastic if he could do it again.”

Execute

Ex-Catalans playmaker Williams is no stranger to single-point success, landing the decisive kick for Canberra Raiders to beat Sydney Roosters 21-20 in the NRL last year.

Williams added: “All halves work on drop goals, so when you are in the moment you have just got to try and execute them.”

Wakefield can move above champions Wigan into fifth by condemning Widnes to an 11th defeat in 14 league games.

Chris Chester’s side – the least-expensively assembled squad in the competition – are also in the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup.

Williams insists they are not punching above their weight. “The outside perspective is not the way we see ourselves,” he said.

“Ever since we got together in pre-season everyone felt confidence about the squad.”
