DIAMONDS KEEPS SHINING

- By CHRIS GOULDING

TOO MANY DIAMONDS has literally earned his corn and a rest after making it a staggering four wins over hurdles in eight days following yesterday’s success at Market Rasen.

Trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by his brother Harry, the eight-year-old started his winning spree at Plumpton on May 14, before following up two days later at Sedgefield and then scoring at Bangor on Saturday.

Skelton has transformed Too Many Diamonds since he claimed the gelding from a selling race at Taunton in April for £6,000.

Prior to joining the Warwickshire trainer, Too Many Diamonds had failed to win in 41 outings when under the care of Clare Ellam and Damian English.

“Going across the line I gave him a big pat, and he deserves it – he’s an incredible little horse,” said Harry Skelton. “To do that, to be ® sound enough and tough enough, all credit to the horse.

“Dan has placed him tremendously well. You need a good team behind you and they leave no stone unturned. He came back from Bangor and had a hard enough race on slower ground than he probably wanted and ate up everything.”

The Skeltons are hoping the winning run continues as he has an entry over fences at Hexham tomorrow.

Skelton added: “Dan is on the ball and he’s back off a chasing handicap mark of 72 [now rated 100 over hurdles] which obviously looks highly appealing.

“But we want to do the right thing by the horse and he won’t be going there unless he is 110 per cent.

“You’ve got to be brave to do what he’s done and he’s done it well.”
