A LORRY driver was being quizzed last night after five people were killed in a motorway smash.

Another man was fighting for his life in hospital with multiple injuries.

The six, all believed to be adults, were travelling in a Nissan Micra on the southbound M6 near Stoke, Staffs.

The 60-year-old HGV driver, from the West Midlands, was arrested at the scene and held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police said four men and a woman died.

Ripped

Pictures show the mangled blue car with its roof ripped off and glass scattered across the tarmac.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said in a statement: “Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the driver and four passengers. All five were confirmed dead on scene.”

Emergency crews closed the M6 between junction 15 and 14 following the accident at 4.30am yesterday.

It sparked huge tailbacks, and the road remained closed for eight and a half hours.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “We can confirm that the lorry driver involved in this morning’s collision has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“A detailed investigation into the incident has begun.”
