Monk's clear to move in at Boro

- by TIM GRAY

AITOR KARANKA could make a return to management with Leeds after Garry Monk’s shock resignation.

Monk has now emerged as a leading candidate to fill the hot seat at Karanka’s old club Middlesbrough.

Monk yesterday walked out of Elland Road after 11 months in charge after being left undermined by new Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani’s plans.

The Italian wanted to bring in a technical director to work alongside

the former Swansea boss. Victor Orta has been lined up for the role at the Yorkshire club after his axing as relegated Middlesbrough’s head of recruitment this week.

Karanka and fellow Spaniard Orta worked together at the Riverside before he was fired as Boro boss in March.

Now they are set to team up again after Monk, 38, quit because he felt the move for Orta showed a lack of commitment to him from Radrizzani.

The owner was stunned by Monk’s decision to quit less than a month after guiding Leeds to their best season since dropping out of the Premier League 13 years ago.

Radrizzani, who completed his takeover by buying up Massimo Cellino’s 50 per cent stake, declared: “Shocking news from Garry Monk.

“We were keen to do a three-year deal with Garry and we were definitely not expecting today’s events.

“We never received any request from him. But no regrets, we did our best.”

Monk’s exit has left Leeds looking for their eighth manager in three years, while his availability will also interest managerless top-flight pair Crystal Palace and Watford.

Marco Silva is also available after resigning as Hull boss last night.
