MIND THE GAP TEZZA

Poll shows Corbyn slashing Tory lead

LABOUR are shrinking the Tory lead in the polls, shock new figures reveal.

Jeremy Corbyn has cut the gap to five points after Theresa May’s U-turn on social care.

In the latest YouGov survey, the Conservatives are on 43%, with Labour at 38%, the Lib Dems 10% and Ukip 4%. The Tory plunge in the polls came on Monday, hours before the terrorist atrocity took place in Manchester. It followed Mrs May’s “dementia tax” U-turn which saw her branded “weak and wobbly”.

Hours after releasing her party’s manifesto, the Tory leader was forced to announce there would now be a cap on the total amount people would have to pay for social care.

Days earlier the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt had described a cap on care costs as unfair.

The Tories’ narrow advantage is in sharp contrast to the 24-point lead ® they held at the height of their popularity under Mrs May.

Labour’s former deputy prime minister Lord Prescott, who has backed Mr Corbyn, declared on Twitter: “It’s happening! Game on.”

Tory candidate for Braintree James Cleverly said: “We never thought this election was going to be a walk in the park. Labour has thousands of activists and millions from the unions.”

Last night, though, when grilled by the BBC’s Andrew Neil, Mr Corbyn refused seven times to answer whether Labour would “ditch” the Trident nuclear deterrent if elected. And Boris Johnson earlier hit out at Mr Corbyn’s speech in which he linked the war on terror with attacks on the UK.

The former US president looked very relaxed as he played a round at St Andrews with pals. And his visit to the famous old Scottish course delighted crowds of onlookers.
