Dank holiday...but summer to return
NOW IT’S TIME FOR THUNDER
BRITAIN will be battered by thunderstorms to bring an explosive end to the bank holiday weekend.
Some areas could be hit by torrential downpours with almost two inches of rain in an hour.
The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for intense deluges in the south today.
But parts of the north and Scotland could still enjoy barbecue weather.
And Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said that after a couple of cooler days the weather will start to hot up again before the weekend.
He said: “The south will see the heaviest downpours on Monday as thundery conditions move up from France.
“We expect between 30mm and 40mm (1.57 inches) in an hour but when the sun comes through it will be quite warm.”
He added: “Southern regions will be warmer with highs of up to 25C whereas the north will stay between 13C and 15C, around average for the time of year.
“It is generally going be quite warm and humid and it is not until Tuesday that we start to see fresher conditions move through the country.
“Then towards the end of next week there are signs of it turning warmer again, not quite as hot as we have seen, but temperatures back into the mid 20Cs.”
Steve Ramsdale, of the Met Office, said torrential rain in southern England threatens flash flooding today.
He said: “Heavy rain will spread north-eastward, with some locally torrential downpours and thunder possible.
“This could result in some disruption, with sudden flooding possible.”
AccuWeather forecaster Kristina Pydynowski said Scotland and the north will be the best places for a bank holiday barbecue today.
She said: “The best chance for a dry day will be across northern Scotland where any showers will be limited to late in the day.”
Experts say that improved weather by the end of the week could be the start of a lengthy spell of warm, dry weather with above average temperatures likely through June. A TEENAGER has died after diving off a waterfall to cool off in the heatwave.
The 19-year-old, from Middlesbrough, who has not been named, was one of four pals who went swimming at a beauty spot on the River Swale near Keld, North Yorks.
