EDDIE JONES says he still owes Chris Robshaw an apology after seeing the England stand-in skipper lift the Old Mutual Wealth Cup at Twickenham.

Robshaw – axed as captain after the 2015 World Cup exit at the group stages – was dismissed as a “club player” when Jones was in charge of Japan.

In promoting Robshaw to co-captain again yesterday, Jones showed how his rating of him has moved on. The England coach said: “I probably started part of that discussion and I still haven’t apologised properly to him.

“Today was nice for him. You could see he was proud carrying the trophy down the stairs.

“It was a bit of a cleansing act for Robbo. He is such a good player for England.

“If we have 15 of him, we will win the World Cup, with that sort of attitude and that sort of commitment.”

Injuries

Nathan Earle, Nick Isiekwe and Danny Care all scored tries for England and fellow co-captain George Ford kicked 13 points with three penalties and two conversions.

But Alex Lozowski and Sam Underhill were both forced off with shoulder injuries and could miss next month’s tour to Argentina.

Robshaw said: “We had a lot of new faces but, as Eddie reminded us before the game, it was a team representing England.

“I didn’t think too much about the captaincy and what had happened before.

“Myself and George just went out to lead the team and encourage the young guys.” THE British and Irish Lions fly to New Zealand today convinced they can stun the world champions in their own backyard in the threeTest series.

England star Owen Farrell said: “It’s a brilliant squad, full of world-class players.”
