Slutsky owes it to Rom

Slutsky has agreed a two-year deal with the Tigers after holding talks with club owner Assem Allam last week.

He will become Hull’s sixth boss in the last five and a half years.

He hopes to lead the Tigers straight back into the top flight after Portuguese head coach Silva narrowly failed to keep them up last season before quitting to take charge at Watford.

Slutsky turned to coaching after his playing career as a goalkeeper was cut short in bizarre style in the early 1990s.

He added: “I was only 19 at the time, and I ended up as a hero in my village. “I climbed up a tree and saved my neighbour’s cat. Unfortunat­ely, I also fell out of the tree and injured my knee.” Slutsky won seven major honours during his managerial career in Russian football, including three league titles with CSKA Moscow.

He then took charge of the Russian national side in 2015, although he remained in charge of CSKA, and was at the helm when they drew 1-1 with England in the group stages at Euro 2016.

He resigned as Russia boss at the end of the tournament after failing to reach the knockout stages.
