ELECT LABOUR TO SAVE JOBS & DEFEND PAY

We’ll invest in skills, schools, NHS

- By JOSHUA NEVETT news@dailystar.co.uk

LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn will defend jobs and workers as PM, he said in an exclusive Daily Star interview.

And he hit out at Tory plans on immigration, saying rules for managing numbers was more important than making promises to cut them.

“Leaving the EU will mean the end of free movement of workers between Europe and Britain.

“There will have to be new rules for managing immigration, and Labour believes these should be based on the needs of the economy.

“Labour will crack down on rogue ® bosses recruiting agency workers from abroad and invest in skills to meet the needs of new industries, the NHS and other public services.

“It will take time for this to have an effect, but we won’t follow the Tories in setting targets that are not met – year after year.”

On defence, Mr Corbyn has been criticised for appearing to waver on his commitment to the Trident nuclear deterrent and the Nato military alliance.

But he said: “The first duty of any government is to keep its citizens safe, and this will be my number one priority.

“Labour will meet all our obligations to our Nato allies, including military action as a last resort.

“But we also have an obligation to seek peaceful solutions. It’s not a sign of strength to rush to war, it’s a sign of weakness.”

On Brexit, he said voting for Theresa May will “put the interests of the wealthy first”.

He told the Daily Star said: “The negotiations with Brussels will be tough but you can rely on Labour to stand up for working people and fight for a deal that protects jobs.

“To invest in our schools and hospitals, Labour will ask the highest earners and big businesses to pay a bit more.

“Our manifesto is fully costed.”
