They challenged the laws head-on, going all the way to the US Supreme Court in what would prove a groundbreaking civil rights case. In this fun-in-parts but mostly rather flat retelling of the story, they are portrayed with some roguish old-school charm by the likes of Larry Lamb, Clive Russell and David Calder.
But it’s former EastEnders star Phil Daniels’ character who best sums them up.
