Dan it! Sales scoops up mighty mirror

- with RICHARD LEE

HUNDREDS of miles of trekking along canal towpaths in search of a big carp finally paid off for Dan Sales when he banked this 32lb 2oz mirror. Dan and fishing pal Gavin Mooney had made the capture of a specimen carp their mission over the past few summers. And they were rewarded when the mirror hoovered up his freelanced bread, presented on a size-4 VMC Mystic Carp wide gape hook, to 10lb line.

“We’ve walked hundreds of miles and worked together as a team to find fish, feed them and then make a cast in the hope of a bite,” said Hertfordshire angler Dan.

“Most of our sessions have been fruitless, which makes this capture all the sweeter.”

THE biggest common carp ever landed in Nottinghamshire has hit the back of the net – weighing 54lb 12oz.

Andrew Stevens caught the record-breaking fish during a session on syndicate venue, Girton Pit. Using a Nash Key Cray boilie, local rod Andrew smashed his personal best by more than 24lb when he banked the giant from the 65-acre venue.

IT’S the first weekend of the new river season and many experts believe bumper catches are on the cards.

Recent rains after a prolonged dry spell has livened up many running water venues and that means plenty of bites for those heading out on the bank.

From the Thames in the South, to the Severn in the Midlands and the Ribble in the North West, the extra water has put much-needed colour in the river, giving the fish confidence to feed after the three-month lay-off.

Barbel Society chairman Steve Pope believes there could be a fish to challenge the existing record barbel of 21lb 1oz.
