Roberts waits for big call

- ® Tonga 6 Wales 24

JAMIE ROBERTS is still fully focused on Wales – and not the British Lions.

Roberts led his country to a deserved win over Tonga in Auckland yesterday.

But instead of heading to Apia to face Samoa next up, the centre has been tipped to stay in New Zealand by winning a call from Warren Gatland.

Roberts said: “We’ll see – I’m still waiting for the call!

“My focus is on Wales. If we lose some players we will just have to adapt accordingly and develop our strength in depth.”

Roberts was part of a makeshift Wales side which fully deserved their win.

But Robin McBryde’s depleted team did lack cohesion, coughed up possession and struggled in the scrum.

Alex Cuthbert’s fine individual try – the wing chipping through and collecting his own kick – was the game’s one moment of class.

Sam Davies missed three kicks so Wales led by only five points at the break, with Sonatane Takulua kicking Tonga’s points.

But Davies found his radar to put the Dragons 17-6 up and there was still time for a late penalty try which was automatically converted as part of World Rugby’s new laws.
