Foxes ready to take Eld

- by STEVE MADELEY

LEICESTER are ready to step up their £2m pursuit of Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare wants the Swiss international to replace Ron-Robert Zieler as Kasper Schmeichel’s understudy.

Jakupovic, 32, could become the second Tigers player to move to the King Power Stadium this summer after Leicester spent £17m for defender Harry Maguire this week.

German keeper Zieler failed to impress in his first season at the club, deputising for Schmeichel, and could leave this summer.

Leicester see Jakupovic as a potential No.1 but are determined to keep Schmeichel, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Hull sources insisted yesterday that the club have received no bids for Jakupovic.

Oxford manager Michael Appleton was meeting with chairman Darryl Eales yesterday following reports he would quit to become Shakespeare’s No.2.

The pair worked together as coaches at West Brom and remained friends.

Appleton guided Oxford to promotion to League One the season before last.
