BREXIT MAKE OR BREAK FOR TEZZA

PM has 9 days to save her job

EMBATTLED Theresa May will start Brexit talks today as she fights to hold on to her job.

The Tory leader reportedly has just nine days to save her position as grassroots party members and backbench MPs lose confidence in her leadership.

She has been heavily criticised for her “cold” reaction to the Grenfell fire disaster just days after her disastrous general election.

Conservative MPs are now allegedly threatening to dump her as party leader if she does not “shape up”.

Yet the pressure could be eased if they believe she can still secure a good deal with the EU. Brexit minister David Davis is heading to Brussels today to begin talks.

He said: “As I head to Brussels to open official talks to leave the EU, there should be no doubt – we are leaving the European Union, and delivering on that historic referendum result.

“It’s vital that the deal we strike allows both the UK and the EU to thrive, as part of the new deep and special partnership we want with our closest allies and friends.”

Terms

Britain has less than two years to negotiate the terms of the divorce before it is due to leave in late March 2019.

Figures have suggested there are 7,000 deals to be negotiated but not a single one is ready.

Officials have drawn up a huge tally of legal and financial problems.

They range from expat rights to pet passports.

But one Brussels source said Britain has not handed in a single “position paper” of what it wants from the talks.

He said: “They are keeping tally and people think of new things every day.”

High up on the agenda will be the £88billion Brexit divorce bill the EU will reportedly try to force Britain to pay.

A recent poll found 69% of the public want a softer Brexit while Tory backbenchers are pushing for a “total Brexit”.
