Father’s Day gets bashing ...from mums

KIDS SPEND LESS ON DADS

- By RUTH McKEE ruth.mckee@dailystar.co.uk

BRITS appear to love their mums twice as much as dads – spending double on cards and presents for mothers.

The nation splashed out £700million on greetings and gifts for their dads on Father’s Day yesterday.

But figures show the total spend on Mother’s Day in March was £1.4billion. And a ® quarter of us even admit that we think Father’s Day is much less important than the one celebrating our mums.

Bargain-basement outlets also appear to be more in favour for paternal pressies, with retail experts predicting a last-minute dash to the likes of Poundland and Aldi. The survey also found that most youngsters ask their mothers to sort gifts and cards for dad.

But fathers can take some consolation from the fact that slashed spending might be a result of the uncertain economy.

Eleanor Parr, retail analyst at GlobalData said: “As disposable incomes become squeezed due to real wage declines, consumers will be more reluctant to allocate discretionary spend on occasions considered less important.

“Father’s Day spending will be a victim of this trend, with a slight increase in spend driven prominently by increased prices rather than shoppers willingness to upgrade their Father’s Day gift purchases this year.”
