A TERROR suspect accused of driving a van into mosque worshippers was allegedly radicalised by watching a BBC grooming drama.
Darren Osborne, 47, yesterday appeared in court charged with the terrorism-related murder of father-of-six Makram Ali.
Mr Ali, 51, died when a rented van ploughed into a crowd leaving Ramadan prayers at Finsbury Park mosque, north London, on Monday. Nine others were hurt.
Dad-of-four Osborne, from Cardiff, is also charged with terrorism-related attempted murder. The suspect, who is jobless and of no fixed address, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court with a bruised left eye.
Samuel Main, prosecuting, said: “The Crown’s case is that Mr Osborne, motivated by extreme political views and personal hatred of Muslims, acted to kill, maim, injure and terrify as many people as he could by driving a vehicle into a group of pedestrians.
Custody
“His was a deliberate and premeditated terrorist act and a terrorist murder.”
Osborne had allegedly demonstrated anti-Islamic views in the weeks before the attack after watching BBC drama Three Girls.
The series, starring Maxine Peake, was based on the Rotherham child sex abuse ring.
He was said to be on medication for depression and had indicated he planned to commit suicide.
Osborne did not enter pleas. He was remanded in custody and the case was sent to the Old Bailey on July 20.jerry.lawton@dailystar.co.uk
