STAN SENT CRASHING OUT

- By DAVID WOODS

TRIPLE Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka’s pain in the grass continued yesterday. The No.6 seed, who has won every major apart from Wimbledon, crashed out in the first round to Russian Daniil Medvedev. His flop followed his opening match defeat at Queen’s, also on grass, to Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. The Swiss star (left) was way off his best as he went down 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1, with a knee injur0y also handicapping the 32-year-old.

Medvedev was left stunned by his Centre Court shock, saying: “Right now I don’t even know what to say.

“It’s my favourite tournament, my first Grand Slam win, so I had to kiss the grass.”

“I was saying yesterday that a year ago I was 215th in the rankings and if someone told me I’d win on Centre Court, I’d say you were joking.”

Wawrinka , who was seeded to face Andy Murray in the last eight, said: “It’s been a tough, tough day.

“I wasn’t feeling the way I wanted to feel and when I play against someone performing at that level, it’s difficult to win.”

Aussie bad boy Nick Kyrgios didn’t have a ‘G’day’ as a hip injury sent him crashing out.

Seeded 20, Kyrgios even claimed his doctor said he should not to play after the problem got worse when he fell in the warm-up tournament at Queen’s.

Kyrgios retired after dropping the first two sets to Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

“I knew I was in trouble,” he said. “I have been feeling my hip ever since I fell over at Queen’s.

“I spoke to the doctor before the tournament started.

“He was leaning towards me not even playing.”
