LET’S SPRING A SURPRISE

- By PATRICK WEAVER

THERE is often a huge advantage to have won at some tracks and Brighton’s switchback course is a case in point.

The Richard Hughes-trained ONE BIG SURPRISE (6.45, nap) has a very good record at the course with form figures of 22314.

Her success came over six furlongs but the step back up to seven should play to her strengths.

The booking of apprentice Finley Marsh is a plus as he takes seven pound off her back.

Hughes has strong claims to complete a double at the seaside track with LAWFILLY (7.45).

She will have the assistance of ® the very capable Nicola Currie, who was on top when a close third at this venue last month.

Over at Uttoxeter it may pay to wait until the last race for the best bet on the card.

DEFINING YEAR (9.05, nb) absolutely hacked up over course and distance last week and may still be ahead of the handicapper.

He carries a penalty for that very easy success but is likely to go up more when re-assessed.

The yard has also made a fantastic start to the new jump season.

Pontefract’s Pipalong Listed Stakes has a field of eight.

Dawn Of Hope is best in on official figures but not far behind her is PIROUETTE (3.10) and she might just edge it.

She is a consistent performer in this company and at Group level and was not beaten far behind Qemah in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Andrew Balding has a 17% strike-rate at Wolverhampton this campaign and DANZAN (2.55) looks another for the Hampshire trainer.

He caught the eye staying on under a considerate ride on his Chelmsford debut and he is entitled to improve with that run under his belt.

Balding also has one in the last, Many Waters, but TOUWARI (5.25) may prove too strong. He found the fast ground at Bath against him last time.
