KERBER HAS TWO GO!

No.1 seed court out again

- By IAN MURTAGH

OUSTED No.1 seed Angelique Kerber wants answers after once again being banished to an outside court.

The German was more upset at having to play on Court Two than losing in three sets to Garbine Muguruza yesterday.

Both are Grand Slam winners and Wimbledon runners-up, yet a matchup fit for the grandest stage was played on the outskirts of SW19.

Nobody watching was complaining as they witnessed arguably the best women’s match of the tournament so far.

Muguruza won 4-6 6-4 6-4 to set up a quarter-final against veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets.

Defeat means Kerber loses top spot in the rankings, but she was left baffled by the All-England Club’s decision not to play her match on one of the show courts.

“To be honest, I was really surprised that I was playing on Court Two,” she said.

“I was looking forward to playing on one of the two big courts. What can I say? This is not my decision. It’s a decision made by others. Maybe I will talk to them.”

Kerber, who has yet to win a title this year after winning two Grand Slams in 2016, insists she can reclaim top spot.

“I will try and come back and be No. 1 again one day,” she added.

“But right now, I am really happy that I have found my game again.”

Former French Open winner Muguruza has vowed to carry on playing an aggressive game in her bid to reach her second Wimbledon final. “That’s the way I play,” said the Spaniard. “As always, I like to go for it.”

Latvian sensation Jelena Ostapenko, who won at Roland Garros this year, shocked Elina Svitolina, the in-form player in the women’s game, with a 6-3 7-6 victory.

And the 20-year-old believes she is running into form at just the perfect time once again.

“I think I am playing better with every match,” she said.

“Just like at the French, I hope I can keep it up.”
