Happy Hughes lands hat-trick of titles
JAMIE HUGHES claimed a record-breaking third Vanarama Fish O’Mania title after a dominant performance at Cudmore Fisheries.
Hughes, from Wirral, Merseyside, clinched glory – and a cheque for £50,000 – with a total of 26.900kg to claim a remarkable hat-trick after wins in 2013 and 2015.
“It is unbelievable, it is something I never thought was possible,” said Hughes, who won from peg 7 on the fishery.
“I was made up with my peg. In that third of the lake you have a chance. I knew I was catching fish and I was there or thereabouts.”
At the final count, Hughes finished comfortably ahead of Andy Power, who weighed in with 21.875. ONE of the biggest roach of the season has been caught at 3lb 5oz after taking a 15mm boilie intended for carp.
The huge redfin was landed by Bury St Edmunds angler Sean Jackson during a session on Suffolk’s Highbridge Fisheries.
Jackson had just caught a double-figured carp when he recast his Trent Baits shrimp flavoured hookbait and it was intercepted by the roach on the drop. IT’S one of the oldest adages in angling, but it worked once again for Gaz Jones when he opted to move swims after seeing showing fish… and ended up banking a superb 52lb 4oz mirror.
The huge carp – known as ‘Dave’ – resides in Swan Lake on the Bluebell Lakes complex in Northants and is widely accepted as being one of the most coveted day-ticket fish in the UK.
Having set up stall for a three-night session, he began by netting a 30lb common.
But two quiet nights ensued, prompting Jones to move. And it paid off when the mirror picked up a 15mm Odyssey pop-up, fished over some freebies, yards from the bank.
