PATRIOTIC tennis fans celebrated a British champion at Wimbledon last night.

Doubles star Jamie Murray stormed to victory on Centre Court with partner Martina Hingis in just one hour and 11 minutes.

The pair beat Jamie’s Brit rival Heather Watson, 25, and her Finnish partner Henri Kontinen, 27, in straight sets, blazing to a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Supporters waved Union flags as the 31-year-old romped to his second Wimbledon mixed doubles victory, with Prince William and wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, both 35, cheering on both British players from the Royal Box.

Pride

Both Murray and younger brother Andy, 30, now boast two sets of SW19 silverware after Jamie won the mixed doubles trophy for the first time 10 years ago.

Proud mum, former Strictly Come Dancing celebrity Judy, 57, who was watching from the seats just behind the players’ box, struggled to hold back tears of pride as her eldest son lifted the trophy. He will split the £100,000 prize pot with 22-time Grand Slam winner Hingis, 36. The duo did not drop a single set throughout the tournament.

Scot Murray and his Swiss partner crushed the defending champions.

Jamie said the atmosphere was “a bit strange” given the presence of the two British players. He added: “It’s a great

success for British tennis to have two in the final.

“I had a great week. We played a lot of amazing tennis, especially in the final.

“I knew we would have to play a good match if we wanted to have a chance to win and we were able to do that.”

Heather told the post-match press conference the crowd had been “really loud” and “a lot more involved” than in last year’s final.

Earlier, an electric charge swept around the crowd on Centre Court as the battle of the Brits got under way.

Stunning

Huge cheers greeted both home-grown tennis champs as they set foot on court.

With regular yells from the crowd cheering on both Watson and Murray, fans threw themselves into the match.

Jamie was also cheered on to the stunning win by dad William.

Two-time Wimbledon men’s singles champ Andy crashed out of the tournament on Wednesday going down in five sets to Sam Querrey.

Roger Federer won the men’s singles title yesterday for a record eighth time. He beat Marin Cilic in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.
