Fed: Andy will rise again

- By IAIN STEWART

ROGER FEDERER has backed injured Andy Murray to be “great” again – but not before he has replaced his rival as world No.1.

The 35-year-old celebrated his eighth Wimbledon title well into the night and admitted he was a little worse for wear yesterday morning.

“My head’s ringing,” he said. “I drank too many types of drinks.

“I got to bed at five in the morning ... but we all had a good time.”

Having risen to No.3 on the back of his Wimbledon success, Federer aims to celebrate regaining top spot for the first time since November 4, 2012.

He said: “I’m playing for titles at this stage in my career, not rankings – but I will have to monitor the situation.”

Murray has gone to Switzerland to see specialists about his injured hip.

But Federer, who rested last year because of his own injury problems, believes a break from the game might not be the answer for Murray.

“We’ll see a great Andy Murray moving forward,” said Federer (right). “He’s still got a lot of years left to play if he is in the mood.

“But it doesn’t mean that because I took a break that everybody should. Some players just need to play.

“They need to play every other day, otherwise they feel like they lose touch with the racket and the ball and the body goes all funny on them.”
