It’s wed alert for Sergio

- by IAIN MacFARLANE

SERGIO GARCIA will shut out thoughts of getting hitched as he tries to rekindle his love affair with The Open.

For years Garcia, 37, felt he had a special bond with the Claret Jug and that it would be a sporting marriage made in heaven – only for his first Major win to come at the Masters in April.

Now just a week ahead of his nuptials with fiancee Angela Akins, the Spaniard has his sights trained on a second Major crown.

Garcia (above) said: “My mind’s on The Open, it’s where it has to be this week.

“Angela has been doing a great job of getting everything ready for the wedding and obviously we’re really excited for next week.

Chance

“But we have something else we’re also excited about this week and hopefully we can be in with a chance on Sunday, it would be great.”

For the Spaniard it has been too often a case of always the bridesmaid and never the bride during Open week.

In his 20 Opens since his debut at Lytham in 1996, Garcia has had an astonishing 10 top-10 finishes.

In 2007 at Carnoustie he lost a play-off to Padraig Harrington having had a putt on the 72nd hole to win.

But after recent wins for fellow countrymen Jon Rahm in the Irish Open and Rafa Cabrere-Bello at the Scottish Open, could Spain’s summer of sporting success continue at Birkdale?

Garcia added: “It’s so great to have Jon and Rafa winning but not only that, Muguruza winning at Wimbledon, too.

“Spanish sport is at a good stage. It’s been up there for a while, with obviously Rafa winning at Roland Garros too.

“So we’re going to try to keep it as much as possible.’’
