Sitting behind the wheel for at least two hours slams the brakes on brainpower, according to research.
It is bad news for car nuts, truckers and taxi drivers who spend hours every day in their motors.
Middle-aged drivers are the ones racing for the finish line as researchers claim they were the worst affected by driving for long distances every day.
The study found people who drove for more than two hours a day had worse brainpower than at the start of the five-year experiment.
During the period 500,000 ® drivers aged 37-73 took memory and IQ tests – and results showed they became rapidly more stupid even after the exercise. Leicester University researcher Kishan Bakrania said: “We know that regularly driving for more than two or three hours a day is bad for your heart. “This research suggests it is bad for your brain too, perhaps because your mind is less active in those hours.” Mr Bakrania found similar results for TV viewing – with those watching telly for more than three hours becoming more stupid. But using a computer to work or even to play games actually accelerated intellect. He said: “Cognitive skills were boosted.”
