Champ Froome targets legends
CHRIS FROOME will shoot for the stars after clinching his fourth Tour de France victory on the fabled Champs-Elysees in Paris yesterday.
After a hat-trick of wins the English ace is aiming to make it four in a row next year to join the list of cycling legends who have five Tour wins to their names.
Froome said: “It’s a huge honour to be mentioned in the same sentence as Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain.
“It’s a privilege to be going for the record next year.”
Magical[
Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen won the 21st and final stage in a sprint finish on the Champs-Elysees, while Team Sky’s Froome, 32, crossed the line just behind to confirm the victory he effectively sealed in Saturday’s time trial in Marseille. He even had time to sip a glass of pink champagne (below) as he cruised the 64-mile stage from Montgeron with wife Michelle and son Kellan waiting near the finish line to celebrate. Froome added: “It’s just an amazing feeling. The ChampsElysees never disappoints. “There is something magical about it when you spend three weeks thinking of this moment. “This one will be remembered as the closest and most hard fought of them.” He finished 54 seconds ahead of Colombian Rigoberto Uran. Fellow Brit Simon Yates, seventh overall, won the white jersey as the best young rider.
