GIN IS BEST BAR NONE

- By PATRICK WEAVER

ON A day of low-key handicaps, the easy option is to home in on the handful of maidens and novice races.

Chirpy 70-something music magnate Chris Wright will be hoping his Goodwood winner May Remain will score at Nottingham.

The problem is that his top weight has a 7lb penalty, the reason why he has had to settle for second on his last two starts.

The likely thorn in his side is GINBAR (6.20, nap).

Richard Kingscote’s mount had the best of the draw on his debut at Chester but was unable to benefit from it owing to his lack of experience.

He finished really well after tucking in, though, and made a promising start to his career. Given he gets 7lb from May ® Remain, he really does need to improve and there can be no complaints that he will start around 5-4.

RHOSNEIGR (2.00, nb) ought to win the first at Ffos Las given the promise he has shown in his two races at Leicester. The main question is whether he will see out the extra 80 yards of today’s race.

The Welsh track’s owner, Dai Walters, is represented by Coal Stock, who was beaten a head over course and distance on his latest start.

Master Grey is proven on soft and very much one to follow for the rest of the season and beyond.

SUBHAAN (8.00, treble) should justify his short odds in his Chelmsford maiden, unless Godolphin’s newcomer, High End, is as good as his stable mate Golden Goal.

That is the grey that beat Subhaan when the pair were making their debuts at the Essex track.

Golden Goal runs off a rating of 81 in the closing handicap, so it would be a bit of a surprise if Subhaan can not get off the mark an hour earlier.

QUESTION OF FAITH (3.45, Musselburgh) does not have a penalty for her win in a 0-65 handicap at Ayr last week.

As today’s race is weaker, she stands out against a moderate lot that rarely win. WHATSTHEMESSAGE (4.15) and SEBASTIAN’S WISH (4.45) are the only recent scorers in their races.

There is every chance they could give in-form trainer Keith Dalgleish his second double in two days.
