Jose demands lots Mour Martial awe

JOSE MOURINHO has urged Anthony Martial to start delivering on a regular basis for Manchester United.

Martial’s failure to win over Mourinho during his year in charge has led to questions over his future.

But the £36m striker showed what he’s capable of with some flashes of brilliance in the pre-season clash with Real Madrid.

The Frenchman’s dazzling solo run set up the opener for Jesse Lingard in the 1-1 draw, before United went on to win the International Champions Cup tie on penalties.

United boss Mourinho said: “Obviously we want more consistency in his talent.

“This was positive for him. It’s why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch, he was enjoying and trying things.

“It’s important to try things in these friendly matches, so it’s good for his confidence.”

Mourinho insists the ex-Monaco star, 21, still has a lot of maturing to do. He axed Martial from several squads last season and publicly questioned aspects of his mentality.

Mourinho added: “He’s a young player who has still time to learn, still time to improve, still time to develop. It’s also his personality, but I can say he is training better than before, he’s working harder.” Martial’s standout performance was in stark contrast to new £31m defender Victor Lindelof. The Swede gifted Real’s Casemiro an equaliser from the penalty spot to cancel out Lingard’s opener. And in a low-quality penalty shootout, which saw seven of the 10 missed, Lindelof was among those to see his spot-kick saved. The two sides meet again in the UEFA Super Cup Final in Macedonia on August 8. And Mourinho – without injured trio Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young for the new season – is now sweating over an injury to Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera. He said: “It’s at least very painful – for him to come off it has to be very painful. “It was in front of the bench, I think it was a bad contact. Maybe ribs or a muscle, I don’t know.” DEFENDER Eric Bailly will miss United’s Uefa Super Cup clash with Real Madrid and United’s first two Champions League games next season after being banned for his red card in May against Celta Vigo in the Europa League.
