Sarah’s killer whines about cell mattress

- By OLIVER PRITCHARD oliver.pritchard@dailystar.co.uk

CHILD killer Roy Whiting is whining that his standard prison-issue mattress has been hurting his back.

The paedophile, who abducted and murdered Sarah Payne in 2000, is now pleading with jail authorities to let him buy his own.

But prison rules forbid inmates upgrading their mattresses, although they are allowed to buy duvets.

A source said: “Whiting is always whingeing about something – whether it is the food, the temperature in his cell or now his mattress.

“He has asked the staff on the wing if he is allowed to buy his own mattress be- cause he says the prisonissue one is too thin but he has been told that there is no chance.

“He says he can’t get to sleep properly and keeps waking up in the morning with aches and pains.”

Whiting, an ex-mechanic, is currently serving a 40year sentence for murdering eight-year-old Sarah from Hersham, Surrey.

The horrific nature of his crime has made the 58-yearold a target for attacks in HMP Wakefield.

According to sources the “loner” prisoner spends most of his days making matchstick models.

Some of them are so impressive that fellow lags have nicknamed Whiting – due for parole when he is 84 – the Matchstick Man.

A source revealed: “Whiting hardly ever ventures out of his cell – even when inmates are allowed to mix freely with each other.

“He’s been attacked a few times and is always wary.

“He’s a loner anyway and spends his days watching telly or glueing models.”
