POCH OK TO KYLE ABUSE

- from JEREMY CROSS

TOTTENHAM boss Mauricio Pochettino reckons fans had every right to boo Kyle Walker.

The full-back was abused by Spurs fans during Manchester City’s 3-0 win in Nashville’s Nissan Stadium.

Walker lined up against his former club within two weeks of quitting White Hart Lane to join Pep Guardiola’s men.

The England star joined City in a £54m deal and trebled his wages.

Issue

Spurs fans jeered Walker throughout but Pochettino said: “I totally understand. Fans showed they are disappointed with the situation.

“The Tottenham fans love him, he spent nine years at the club. It is not personal. It is not a big issue. It is only to show they were disappointed.”

Pochettino has attempted to calm Spurs supporters’ nerves about their failure to land any new players this summer.

But he did admit they have ground to make up on City in the transfer market and in terms of preparation for the new season. After seeing a full-strength Spurs side lose to City, he said: “City have more senior players than us and they invest more money than us.

“You can see that we have a lot of young players on the bench.

“It’s true the squads are completely different but we are building ours.

“Maybe they have a little bit of an advantage. They are ahead of us because they have signed and kept the players that they want.

“We are a little bit behind but working hard to sign some players who can make us more competitive.

“You want to win but City were better than us, showed better quality. We lost and deserved to lose, and they deserved to win.

“It is not trying to justify it, for me they were better.

“But our main players started training 14 days ago and it’s very difficult to get fit if you only focus on playing games.”
