Career looks over for shamed star

DRUGS BAN KO'S CHASE

RANGI CHASE’S rugby league career could be over after he tested positive for cocaine.

Widnes were dealt the crushing blow about the troubled former England star yesterday and he was immediately suspended.

The 31-year-old half-back is expected to get a two-year ban and it’s unlikely he will ever return as a top-flight player.

Controversy has dogged the New Zealand-born player’s career and Castleford off-loaded him earlier this season after he was dropped following two separate off-field incidents, then loaned to Widnes in May.

Regret

They were so impressed they handed him a two-year deal last month but now – like Cas, Salford and Leigh before them – they are left to regret taking a gamble on him.

Salford sacked him in October 2015 after he reportedly failed to turn up for training on time and went on sick leave.

He joined Leigh but played just five games before walking out, saying he was quitting rugby league due to depression.

Castleford took him on months later but off-field antics forced him out and Widnes have now also had their fingers burned.

It’s a shocking probable end to a career that saw the 2011 Man of Steel play for England eight times. ° CATALANS full-back Tony Gigot has been banned for two years for “inappropriate behaviour” towards an antidoping official.

Gigot served three months earlier this season before the ban was overruled but French anti-doping authorities have now had it reinstated.
