Hotter than hell

Fears for Brits caught in ‘Lucifer’ heatwave ALL THE NEWS,

- By RUTH McKEE ruth.mckee@dailystar.co.uk

FEARS are growing for Brit holidaymakers trapped in a killer 45C heatwave nicknamed “Lucifer” that is sweeping Europe.

Officials in Italy are on red alert over the deadly heat while swathes of Spain and France have sent out amber warnings.

As the mercury soared to 45C across central and southern Europe emergency services were put on stand-by.

And authorities are begging Brits to keep out of the deadly midday sun.

Millions of Britons are escaping grey skies to sun themselves in resorts like Antalya, in Turkey.

The official advice to those caught in the midst of the hellish weather is to stay inside, avoid long journeys, drink plenty of water and listen to emergency warnings.

Already two people have died in the crippling temperatures – one in Romania and the other in Poland.

Scores of people have been taken to hospitals suffering from extreme sunstroke. Wildfires have been reported in northern Spain and Italy.

A spokeswoman for the Association of British Travel Agents, has urged sun-worshipping Brits to ditch the tanning oil and head for the shade. The lethal heat is expected to last until next Wednesday and temperatures are likely to soar to 41C in Seville, Spain, 39C in Rome, and 38C in Athens.

Meanwhile, British tourists have been caught up in airport chaos as they try to get home as European countries ramp up border controls.

The new security checks have left swarms of tired holidaymakers stranded in queues of up to four hours at some European transport hubs.

Tourists are bearing the brunt of the checks because the UK is outside the Schengen border zone.

And some Brits fear the day-long waits have been set up as “punishment” over our Brexit vote to leave the EU.

Travellers jetting in to Malaga, Mallorca, Lisbon, Milan, Paris, Lyon and Brussels have all been trapped in the never-ending security lines.

But British officials have pledged to hit back and could set up UK-only passport lines here to retaliate for the pain abroad.
