Liam looks back in sorrow
APOLOGY TO NICOLE
LIAM Gallagher’s new solo single is both an apology to his ex-wife and two fingers up at his brother.
For What It’s Worth boasts heartfelt lyrics alluding to Liam’s breakup with Nicole Appleton after he fathered a child with a journalist.
The apologetic song comes accompanied by music which bears more than a passing resemblance to Noel’s classic, Don’t Look Back In Anger.
The sweeping chorus opens with the line: “I’ll be the first to say I’m sorry, I made my own mistakes. For what it’s worth I know it’s just a word and words betray. Sometimes we lose our way.”
Last year Nicole and her All Saints bandmates took a swipe at Liam with their own comeback song, One Strike.
That obviously didn’t go unnoticed by Liam, who also hints that things weren’t all his fault. He sings: “Behind the lenses is a poison picture you paint, let’s not pretend you were ever searching for saints, because I’ve been crucified for just being alive. First bird to fly gets all the arrows, let’s leave the past behind with all our sorrows.”
Fans will also be shocked by the strong similarities with Don’t Look Back In Anger. Everything from the string orchestrations to the George Harrison-style guitar licks sound inspired by the Oasis hit, sung by Noel.
A source said: “Liam was threatening to sing Don’t Look Back In Anger live to prove he could sing it better.
“Now he doesn’t have to. It proves that Liam can write a song every bit as good as Noel’s.”
For What It’s Worth is out now and his debut solo album As You Were drops October 6.
