EU SHOUT OF ORDER

Davis haggling on £91bn bill

BREXIT negotiations are descending into shouting matches with EU chiefs furious at the UK.

Britain is standing firm and insisting on a “long haggle” in a bid to slash the £91billion divorce settlement.

But Brexit Secretary David Davis has revealed the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier is becoming increasingly impatient.

He said: “Michel is getting quite cross with us. He’s saying ‘you should make your proposal’.

“We’re going to have a long haggle. It’s going to be quite tough and difficult. But we are not going to be ending up paying the £10bn a year which is what we pay now. We’re going to sort this out.”

The EU is also keen to get an agreement over expatriates and Britain’s border with Ireland.

Mr Davis last night submitted proposals for a temporary customs union after the UK leaves the Union in March 2019.

It would avoid a “cliff edge” for businesses until final plans were approved, he said.

However former Ukip leader Nigel Farage accused ministers of “dither and delay” and urged the Government to negotiate new trade deals. He said: “We have an American president in Donald Trump who is really keen as mustard to do a deal with us.

“Under the plan revealed by David Davis, we would not be able to sign that trade deal until President Trump was nearing the end of his second term.”

Meanwhile Mr Davis’s former aide has launched a scathing attack on his former boss.

James Chapman claimed in a series of tweets that the Brexit Secretary does not “have the first idea” and has “been working 3 day weeks since day one”.
