McFURY AT BIG MAC’S!
Staff in strike vote
WORKERS at McDonald’s are set to strike for the first time in the chain’s 40-year UK history.
Forty staff at two restaurants are unhappy about pay and alleged bullying.
They say they are fed up with the company’s use of zero-hour contracts and are demanding a wage of £10 an hour.
The Bakers’ Food and Allied Workers Union has announced members will be balloted, with a decision expected next week on possible action at Cambridge and Crayford, south-east London.
The union added many members found they could not afford rent and had been forced to leave their homes as a result of existing pay conditions.
Tom Holiday, a worker at the Cambridge branch, said: “We are asking to be treated with dignity and be paid a decent wage.
“McDonald’s must consider reinvesting its huge amount of net profits back into its workforce.”
Shen Batmaz, a worker at Crayford, added: “This strike is part of a global movement advocating for fair salaries and decent working conditions.”
The chain, which has about 34,000 restaurants worldwide, is also facing action in the US.
A spokesman for the burger giant said: “We have been told that the dispute is solely related to our internal grievance procedures.” I enclose a cheque for £ Express Newspapers Offer FDS9978.
