LOGAN LUCKY (12A)

THAT dinner jacket is such a perfect fit, I’d almost forgotten about Daniel Craig the actor.

There are some excellent performances in this enjoyable heist comedy but Craig steals more than his fair share of scenes as a redneck safecracker.

It’s also a comeback of sorts for Ocean’s 11 director Steven Soderbergh who announced his bigscreen retirement four years ago.

Channing Tatum and Adam Driver are Jimmy and Clyde Logan, good ol’ boy brothers who plan to rob a racetrack while it’s hosting one of the biggest NASCAR meetings of the season.

This isn’t all about the money. Iraq war veteran Clyde is convinced that the Logan clan is cursed and has a list of unlucky ancestors and a missing arm to back him up.

When Jimmy, whose promising football career was cut short by a knee injury, loses his construction job he persuades his brother to help him break the hex. That job was filling sinkholes beneath North Carolina’s Charlotte Motor Speedway.

But shortly before he got the push, Jimmy made a very lucky discovery, a network of tubes that whisks cash from the racetrack into an underground vault.

First they have to spring explosive expert Joe Bang (Craig) out of prison and get him back to his cell before anyone has noticed.

The brothers’ speed demon sister Mellie (Riley Keough) – think a deadpan Daisy Duke – will provide the wheels and Bang’s younger brothers (Jack Quaid and Brian Gleeson) will do the legwork.

To say much more would spoil the fun. Soderbergh knows precisely which parts of the plan to reveal and which bits to save for the twist. It’s not the most original film of 2017 but it’s a very entertaining one.
