TODAY is set to become the hottest Bank Holiday Monday in history – with the mercury soaring to a record-breaking 29C.

Hordes of Brits will flock to beaches, parks and pubs for a welcome late blast of sizzling summer sunshine following a dismally damp August.

BRITAIN will today swelter in a 29C mini-heatwave on the hottest August Bank Holiday Monday ever.

Millions are set to flock to the beaches for the last blast of sun on this year’s busiest summer weekend.

Weathermen say it will be the warmest Holiday Monday since the day began 52 years ago in 1965, rescuing the coldest August for 45 years.

The last proper scorcher is set to break the previous record of 28.3C, set on August 27, 1990, at March, Cambs. And even the northern reaches of the country will get to bathe in sunshine with a predicted 26C in the Humber region.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Monday could be almost unbroken sunshine for parts of the South.

“We’ve not a had a run of several warm days for weeks – so it’s good timing for the Bank Holiday.

“High pressure is over the UK, combined with some air arriving from the near continent.”

Resorts were packed out across Britain yesterday as the mercury hit 27C. A million visitors swamped Cornwall, with 450,000 expected to have visited Brighton by today,

Another 300,000 flocked to Blackpool, 225,000 headed to Bournemouth while 200,000 converged on Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.

A Brighton spokesperson said: “It’s our busiest weekend of summer.” Revellers at Reading and Leeds festivals sweltered all weekend.

The sun beat down on Reading as Bastille, Two Door Cinema Club and Kasabian wowed sunburnt crowds of fans.

The sudden sunburst has finally saved the nation’s sun worshippers from a bleak August.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said: “29C looks like it could be the maximum temperature in the South today.

“The highest Bank Holiday Monday temperature on record is 28.3C, set in 1990, provisional data going back to 1975 shows.

“It’s nice and warm for most – and, after the weather in recent weeks, it’s about time too.”
