WAYNE Rooney has some explaining to do after being arrested while driving a pretty brunette home in her VW Beetle.

The ex-England captain, whose wife Coleen is expecting child No4, was charged with being over the limit after a marathon booze session.

He spoke nervously on the phone as he was taken home following hours in custody.

WAYNE Rooney had to make a “call of shame” to his pregnant wife yesterday after being nicked for drink-driving in another woman’s car.

The ex-England football captain was stopped by police while taking a 29-year-old brunette home in her black Volkswagen Beetle at 2am.

He was arrested and held in a police station for 11 hours before being charged with drink-driving.

The 31-year-old striker, who rejoined boyhood club Everton in the summer from Manchester United, was released on bail to appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on September 18.

As he was driven into the grounds of his £6million mansion by his agent Paul Stretford at 2.30pm yesterday, Rooney was seen nervously talking on his mobile.

He faced the grim prospect of explaining the circumstances surrounding his arrest to wife Coleen, 31, who was on holiday in Mallorca with their three sons Kai, seven, Klay, four, and 19-month-old Kit.

Dancing

Last night she was understood to be flying home.

While Coleen was on holiday, where she had been pictured showing off her baby bump, Rooney met up with former Manchester United team-mate Wes Brown, 37, and the younger brother of Burnley defender Phil Bardsley.

At 4pm the trio began a 10-hour bender with a late lunch at Italian restaurant Piccolino in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, about five miles from Rooney’s home.

They then moved on to the trendy Bubble Room bar where the footballer was seen dancing on the tables to local band Funky Treacle.

The three pals were heard bellowing out the Oasis hit Wonderwall at around 10pm. A lo- cal in the bar said Rooney was “singing and dancing on the tables and having a whale of a time”.

After leaving The Bubble Room, Rooney and his two pals were seen in cocktail bar The Symposium three miles away in Wilmslow.

At one stage the footballer posed for a picture with Shropshire cricketer Jack Iver.

Rooney was pulled over by police just yards from The Symposium at 2am.

A local said: “You wonder if someone tipped off the police. I can’t believe he didn’t get a cab. It would have cost him nothing from here.”

A source close to Rooney said he was on an “all-night session” with his mates and had offered to help out the single woman – an office worker from Salford – because she was “too drunk to drive”.

Kayman Swindlehurst, 26, who posted a selfie taken with Rooney at 2am, tweeted: “Can’t believe I met my idol last night then he gets arrested for drinkdriving.’’

Rooney’s spokesman declined to comment last night, as did officials from Everton.
